The original Aluminium shut pillar covers on my BT7 are in pretty good condition (for their age!). See below.... Any tips / advice on how best to clean up, remove the tarnishing without affecting the dimple pattern.

I posted this on the FB Healey restorers site and have quite a few suggestions, ranging from crumpled aluminium foil to alloy wheel cleaner. Interestingly Dave Hardwick, sometimes of this parish, chipped in with a suggestion and did a trial with a couple of acids which look promising.
So next week, hopefully I'll give it a try and post a pic of the results.
Side note, the wheel cleaner (which was a mix of the acids Dave used) did a good job, but might be a bit powerful - so I'll try the milder approach first and if that doesn't work go in a bit more robustly.

Well, phase 1 completed - 2 hours soaking in 30% Phosphoric acid..... In retrospect, I should have given them a once over with paint remover first, to get rid of the overspray at top and bottom. Also the sides (certainly on 1) look to have some residual body filler attached. I'll get rid of these and then see how things look, before deciding on next step.

Vapour blasting will return them looking like new, it will not remove large amounts of the surface the way soda blasting does and generates no heat so no deforming, probably cost about £10 to have them done.
