Is there any information on whether the five-stud rear axle was designed specifically for the Austin Healey BN1, or rather was it an adaptation of an existing part used for other BMC models, and perhaps used/tested on the early works cars? I read that production change over for the unit occurred sometime in the latter part of 1954, but haven’t identified a date; was it previously available for retro fitting? any help appreciated. Thanks.

Extract from "Original Austin Healey" by Anders Clausager ......
Rear Axle. Two types of rear axle were found. The original type was the spiral bevel, 3/4 floating axle also found on the A70/A90 models, with a final drive ratio of 8/33 (4.125to 1). An alternative ratio of 8/33 (3.667 to 1) was optional. From chassis number 221536 (Nov '54) it was replaced by a hypoid bevel, 3/4 floating axle, of a new standardised BMC design, also found on the Austin A90 Six Westminster. The ration of this axle was marginally higher at 10/41 (4.1 to 1).
Hope this helps
