I don't have a key for the boot lock of my BN1. On inspection, it has 898 stamped on the shaft. Unfortunately, this could also be 868 depending on orientation. I've tried FS 898 with no luck, and it seems FS 868 doesn't exist. Has anyone got a clue as to the likely prefix if it is indeed 868? Thanks Andrew web img

Andrew, An original BN1 boot lock has the same number as the ignition lock of the same car and should have a FA 5xx number. Could the first 8 be a 5. Than it could be FA 568. But I suspect your boot lock is not originally from a BN1. FS keys where used on BJ8s. Earlier 6cylinders had FP keys in the 600-700 range. Cheers, Josef

Thanks Joseph, I didn't realise how widely used this handle was. Unfortunately the boot lid isn't original. The number is definitely 8_8. The boot lid is an original part and has obviously been salvaged sometime in the distant past. Incidentally, my earlyish cars ignition key is an FS. So can I assume this is also a later replacement?

Yes! A BN1 key-number starts with FA xxx. FS keys were not out when the 100 was in production. My 62 3000 even has a FP number. FS keys/barrels came later.

Is it possible to change the barrel? Doesn't look possible to me. I think you just have to buy a complete new handle and lock.

Based on the quality of some repro parts, you might be better off with a bagel !

It is possible to change the barrel, if you can get a new one. You have to carefully file the square steel rod to take away the indents that had been created. The barrel should then slip out. It is possible to file the little brass tumblers ( not sure if that's the right word ) to suit the key you have. I ve done in the past to have a single key for the car

Thanks for the help. The lock can indeed be stripped. The barrel is different to those commonly found for the ignition, so I obtained a matching pair os NOS barrels and swapped the leaves/tumblers in the boot lock barrel. Two locks, one cup....I mean Key!
