Anyone know how to identify what type of camshaft is fitted to your engine, BN6, BJ8, road fast, race, etc. ?

Is the number stamped on a camshaft a way of identifying which type it is ? I have three camshafts but don't know its origin.

They certainly don't seem to be after market, the readable one has the number 594 stamped between two lobes.

I bought my first Austin-Healey in 1984 and did 3 full nut and bolt restorations of Austin-Healeys, a Daimler and a Morris Minor Lowlight. I am working daily on my and my friends cars. So I learned a lot about Austin-Healeys. I am an active member of the Austin-Healey Club Midlands Centre and for about 10 years National Concours Secretary of the Austin-Healey Club UK. Best resource for information for me is the book of Anderson/Moment and the Concours Guide published by the Concours Registry in the USA. But some informaton you will find in the internet, I just googled it. It was discussed in the American Healey Forum.

josefeckert, looking at two of the camshafts there is subtle difference one is stamped 594 and where this appears there is one ring on the other shaft with a letter 'J' stamped on the surface area where the drive pulley would be fitted. Here is a picture of two the camshafts with 594 visible on one and the extra ring on the other, what does this ring signify ?

I have no idea what the "J" means. When I do a 100/6 or 3000 engine I always replace the existing camshaft with a new DWR1 camshaft. For me the best balanced camshaft for Austin-Healey 6 cylinder engines for street use. You still have the very good torque at low revs and some extra power at revs > 3500 U/min.
